Bringing new life to Knud’s House

CLIENT: INDUSTRIMUSEET FREDERIKS VÆRK
PROJECT: BRINGING NEW LIFE TO KNUD RASMUSSEN’S HOUSE

TYPOLOGY: MUSEUM DESIGN AND EXHIBITIONS
LOCATION: HERNING, DENMARK
KVORNING carried out a major update of Knud Rasmussen’s House in Hundested in Denmark. Bringing new life to his iconic house. It feels as though the Greenlandic-Danish author and polar explorer has returned to his beloved house, with its magnificent views over the Kattegat, the memorial cairn, and Spodsbjerg Lighthouse.
Within his stylish rooms, most of the house’s built-in cupboards have been transformed into ultra-modern display cases featuring artefacts, each telling stories from Knud’s life and expeditions. When opening the doors, his hunting rifles, gleaming orders, and medals are revealed—along with rare film footage and models depicting the harsh Arctic. One cabinet conceals a truly special visual effect that must be experienced in person.
The fireplace crackles softly. A piano plays in the background, while a typewriter cheerfully taps away from Knud’s study. A living scenography that sparks memories and brings history vividly to life. The project was made possible though financial support of the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation and carried out in close collaboration with Copenhagen Lighting Studio and local producers.
