CLIENT: LANDSKRONA MUSEUM, LANDSKRONA MUNICIPALITY
PROJECT: THE ESCAPE 1943; EXHIBITION CONCEPT, GRAPHIC IDENTITY, ANIMATION, FILM MAKING
TYPOLOGY: MUSEUM DESIGN AND EXHIBITIONS
LOCATION: LANDSKRONA, SWEDEN
In October 1943, thousands of Danish Jews fled across the Øresund to Sweden to avoid being deported. The escape is a historic event about persecution, but also about hope. Many Danish Jews arrived in Landskrona, and the reception of the refugees is part of the town’s history and should continue to be remembered.
THE ESCAPE 1943 is conceived as a single narrative about humanity and courage, using a carefully considered scenographic and dramaturgical approach that engages visitors from beginning to end. We follow three young people — Ole, Anna, and Birthe — during their escape across the sound, their lives in exile, and their integration into Swedish society through school, language, traditions, and friendships, all the way to the end of the war and the farewell to their new Swedish friends before returning to Denmark in 1945.
A distinct narrative also emerges around the Landskrona Citadel and its role as a hostel and reception center for refugees both during the war and in the years 1945–53. KVORNING won the tender to develop and help realize the concept for the new museum at the Landskrona Citadel. The commission also included graphic identity, interactive elements, animation, and film making. H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria inaugurated the museum on May 29, 2026.
