New exhibition for Danfoss in Als

Kvorning Design & Communication is responsible for the concept, design and production of the Danfoss Museum’s new permanent exhibition, ‘Mads and his dreams’, about the founder, Mads Clausen (1905-1966). Set on his native farm in Als, the exhibition takes its cue from Mads’s ability to dream throughout his life. From pure imagination and fervent desire during his boyhood, through inspiration and creativity in his youth, to concrete goals for the future during adulthood.

‘Mads and his dreams’ brings to life the tale of a person who is capable of dreaming, setting himself goals and accomplishing them. A narrative device with conscious dramatic art, light, sound and projections. The rooms of the farm create filmic backdrops to the anecdotes. A poetic and unconstrained layer that underpins the narrative. Displays operate on sight-lines and axes, positioning central experiences and points de vues at the end of them, with one room thereby introducing the next. In parallel with Mads’s life story and Danfoss’s development, the rooms and the stories unfurl – ups and downs – joys and sorrows.

Norwegian salmon spawns winning concept

Kvorning Design & Communication and the Norwegian Vindfang have won the competition for an exhibition concept about Norway’s second-largest export business, the aquaculture industry, for the Coastal Museum under the museum complex at Sør-Trøndelag in Norway. The concept of ’The Pioneers’ takes as its inspiration the tales of the initiative-takers ’from the fish-farming heartland’. Who were they? What did they think? How did they advance by trial and error? What proved successful? And what did they learn?

At Hitra, on an island just off Trondheim, it’s all about salmon. Here, fish eggs are fertilized, matured and hatched in fresh water. Here young salmonids grow to full size in the floating fish-rearing cages of the sea. And here at the Coastal Museum’s Sandstad Department they are harvested. So this is the obvious location to convey the history of the Norwegian fish-farming industry, and to let 24 pioneers tell you about their contribution to the development of Norway’s second-largest export trade.

Kvorning and Vindfang’s concept conveys Norwegian fish-farming history from 1970 to the present day through three major narratives: The local history, with animation of Hitra and the area; the national history of the pioneers along the coast from Finnmark to Vestfold, through wall panels, photos, interactive screens, short texts, objects in display cases, light and sound; and the history of the salmon and the industry as a reworked 360-degree show with moving pictures and natural sounds in Aegir’s Hall: the octagonal cinema. Silhouettes of the 24 pioneers reflect the dynamics. Past and present.

The concept was won in a competition, with Kvorning Design & Communication and Vindfang from Hitra teaming up to secure international experience for the assignment combined with a local presence. Head of Department Magnar Ansnes from the Coastal Museum at Hitra justifies the winner concept thus:

“Kvorning and Vindfang’s exhibition concept is both self-mediating and well suited to larger groups with a guide. The overall look of the concept works well, just as the route around it is self-evident. The re-purposing of existing installations by the team, e.g. in Aegir’s Hall, frees up resources and gives us more room for manoeuvre. And finally, the team’s excellent control of the light is a feature to which the museum attributes great importance.”

Kvorning to design Vega world heritage exhibition

Kvorning Design & Communication beats off international competition and wins the contract for the design of a world heritage exhibition about ‘Wildy, beautiful Vega’ commissioned by Vega Verdensarvsenter AS.

The concept of the exhibition is inspired by the rich cultural landscape of the Vega archipelago and forms an abstract retelling of the archipelago’s contrasting landscape with steep mountain sides and flat islands just above sea level. The interior will refer to the typography of the islands and the unique production of eider down, reflective acrylic plates will symbolise the Northern Lights and the selection of colours and materials will be inspired by the wooden houses and churches of Vega.

Vega is one of the world’s most fascinating archipelagos. More than 230 bird species, eiders in particular, thrive on the 6,500 islands, islets and rocks. Through 1,500 years the fishermen and farmers of Vega have lived sustainably in this inhospitable, maritime landscape close to the polar circle thanks to their unique either down harvesting. This is also why Vega’s cultural landscape was inscribed on UNESCO’s world heritage list in 2004.

Vega Verdensarvsenter will open to the public in the autumn of 2018 but the official opening will take place in 2019.

Impressive acclaim for the Prison Museum

The Prison Museum in Horsens made it to the finals and top ten in The Luigi Micheletti Awards presented by The European Museum Academy at this year’s ceremony hosted in Skopje, Macedonia. The jury’s motivation was that the Prison Museum has contributed to making Horsens, a former prison town, a positive experience and the jury also praised the authentic prison narratives. In total 32 museums were competing for the The Luigi Micheletti Award.

The Prison Museum also fighted head to head in the finals at the museum business’ world championships, The Best in Heritage 2017, at the annual global conference taking place in Dubrovnik, Croatia. ‘HISTORY COLLECTION’ IN LEGO HOUSE

When LEGO House, the toy company’s brand-new experience centre in LEGO hometown Billund, opens on 28. September 2017 – Kvorning Design & Communication has a finger in the pie. In close collaboration with LEGO, Kvorning has designed and produced the ‘History Collection’ which showcases all the highlights since 1932.

In a continuous, close collaboration with the LEGO Group’s ever so committed and inspired employees within the historic branch, Kvorning Design and Communication has designed and developed the exhibitions for the History Collection in the base of the LEGO House; a new 12,000 square metre experience centre in LEGO’s home town Billund.

Explore childhood memories

As grown-ups and kids head down the stairs, or descend by the elevator, into the basement and the ‘History Collection’, they are welcomed by a 2 x 2 metre logotype. The visitors will explore their own childhood through the gems of the exhibition: LEGO products will convey the company’s long history though significant milestones, drawings and models. Here is everything a true Lego fan could possibly imagine. Of course, there are also animations of kids playing in classic scenarios, familiar to most visitors either from themselves or their kids.

LEGO® models and boxes through decades

Halfway through the collection visitors will see a light which lures them into a room resembling the interior of a giant LEGO brick. The room features an exhibition of original LEGO models and boxes through decades. Regardless of age, anyone can find a cherished LEGO box, either as a physical model or on the interactive table displaying more than 5,000 LEGO boxes. In two, big round showcases and along the walls are hundreds of original models and boxes on display to stir dear memories. ‘History Collection’ is a true treasury which will steal your heart and mind.

’The Green Box’ is a huge success

‘The Green Box’, an interactive exhibition presenting 100 cool vocational training programmes available for students in Odense, Denmark, is a huge success. Especially among 7th graders. Since the exhibition opened in October 2015, 47 schools, 155 classes and 2809 students in grade 7 to 10 have visited the exhibition and 60 classes with students aged 18 to 29, who are participating in a jobseeking/educational-programme, have seen it too.

Jørgen B. Jensen, Education Advisor at Odense Municipality says –

”’The Green Box’ has evoked a lot of enthusiasm among students as well as teachers. Combining analogue and digital features is ingenious because it reflects the reality of the vocational education programmes. This is how they work too. A concrete task and a little bit of IT. ‘The Green Box’ presents our vocational educations in a fun and informative manner. Here the youngsters can identify educations by listening and watching. Watch an animated movie. Put tiles in patterns just like a plasterer. Meet companies and educational institutions, hear about their options with regards to getting an internship or, perhaps, even get an appointment.”

Odense municipality operates ‘The Green Box’, which has been developed in liason with Kold College, Syddansk Erhvervsskole and Social- og Sundhedsskolen Fyn og Tietgen. Kvorning Design & Communication has designed exhibitions, animated movies, interactive design, lighting and more.

25 years in exhibition business

When the bells ring out at midnight and 2017 sets off, Kvorning Design & Communication can formally celebrate 25 years in the exhibition business. Designing and producing exhibitions around the globe, Arne Kvorning’s journey took off in 1992. Later forming one of the biggest Danish and Nordic teams working on the international scene, his line-up has now made it into the league of the world’s 10 most influential exhibition design agencies.

The upcoming New Year’s Eve is a historic milestone for Kvorning Design & Communication and marks 25 years in the exhibition business. Since 1992 the Copenhagen based exhibition team has created magic rooms and moments for people in more than 50 countries around the globe. Blending architecture, narration and design, vivid and vibrant exhibitions are formed, and by means of dramaturgic effects and narrative techniques from film production the agency’s modern dissemination captivate audiences worldwide.

Delphi, Dover, Dubai …
The Kvorning team design exhibitions of any kind; simple or complex, big or small. Keeping the doors open, over the years the design jobs have become bigger and more advanced and the invitations to tender for the world’s biggest exhibition assignments arrive with increasing frequency. Right now the team is working on several major projects: At Shannxi History Museum in Xi’an, China, Kvorning is designing a touring exhibition around a series of inaccessible, underground tombs with unique frescos from the Tang dynasty through virtual reality, animations and movies. Kvorning is also designing for the visitor centre at Greece’s largest bauxite mine for The Vagonetto Fokis Mining Park in Delphi. A few years ago Kvorning conceptualized, designed and installed one of English Heritage’s most popular tourist attractions, Dover Secret Wartime Tunnels. Here Kvorning won the competition for the exhibition telling the tale of how approximately 400 000 allied soldiers were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk during WW2. This operation was masterminded and organized in the tunnel system reaching far into the white cliffs of Dover. In Dubai and other emirates several interesting competitions are ongoing. In Norway, one of Kvorning’s key markets, the team is working on designs for Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger, Norsk Jektefartsmuseum at Bodø and no less than eight Norwegian world heritage sites listed by UNESCO. The agency is indeed also producing for their home market; recently the Prison Museum in Horsens, which Kvorning revitalized with storytelling, projections, interactive elements, light, sounds and smells, was awarded several international prizes. Last week Kvorning finished in a very honorary second place in fierce competition with nine international exhibition designers as Lead Exhibition Designer for the exhibitions at the world’s largest archaeological museum, Grand Egyptian Museum, in Cairo.

Kvorning wins exhibition project at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum

The concept ‘The secrets of the sea’ landed Kvorning Design & Communication the contract for a new exhibition about petroleum geology at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum in invited competition. The project proposal will give the Stavanger museum a new iconic element – an exhibition with a stunningly grand visual effect – which lure both youngsters and adults far down beneath the seabed.

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum’s new exhibition features science, activities and drama – pure Jules Vernes – as the working title of the winning concept ’The secrets of the sea’ suggests. In all parts of the exhibition hearts, brains and muscles of both children and grown-ups will be put to test. Zones with analogue and digital activities encourage collaborations, learning and play. This approach will surely appeal to the primary target group of the exhibition – 12 year old boys and girls – and most likely the rest of the families too.

Pedagogic substance and innovative wow-effect

“We see that Kvorning Design & Communication has understood the task and delivered a very resilient, well-reasoned and appealing concept. They unite wow-effect with the possibility of gaining facts and knowledge in an innovative design.” … “Our decision is based on what we think will make it possible to open a new exhibition about petroleum geology, with pedagogical substance and innovative wow-effect that will be strong enough to boost The Norwegian Petroleum Museum not only in 2017, but in many, many years to come.”

Whirlpool or gigantic wave

The design of the exhibition is inspired by the sea; travelling in the sea and along the seabed. A shape of a whirlpool or a gigantic wave pursues the theme inspired by tornadoes, the eyes of hurricanes, whirlpools and the human eye. The role of mankind is central: Getting the idea to extract oil from the bottom of the sea, overcoming the technical restrictions that hinder oil finding – and not least – extracting it from the sediments deep, deep down under the seabed.

Working closely with the museum

The new exhibition at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum will be developed in close liaison with Kvorning. By working together the museum will get a perfect starting point for a resourceful, purposeful and dynamic exhibition which incorporates a concept where analogue and digital means of communication actively blend together and turn advanced technical questions and subjects into straightforward and relevant information as well as fun and playful knowledge.

About The Norwegian Petroleum Museum

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger conveys the history of the Norwegian petroleum industry in a modern and interactive museum environment. The museum opened in 1999 and has approximately 100,000 visitors each year.
